Enchanted Shoes

Mela is a daughter of a poor cobbler. One day, enraptured by a pair of red shoes in a shop, she demands that her father buy her those shoes. She does not listen to her father explaining that he has no money. At night the cobbler decides to make Mela an identical pair of shoes to that from the shop window. The Moon sees this and gives the shoes magical powers. Next morning, although she likes the shoes, Mela casts them aside claiming that those in the shop are far nicer. In a near-by castle there lives a Prince, as capricious as Mela. The Royal Sage claims that the Prince should play with other children. The Prince sets off in search of company. He meets Mela in the town and takes her to the castle. Mela gets a hundred pairs of beautiful shoes and a hundred of the most beautiful dresses. She forgets her father, and when he arrives at the castle, she orders him to be thrown out. At night Kasia, a maid of the Prince, brings the shivering cobbler a shawl. The cobbler sees her tattered shoes and gives her the pair that Mela had rejected. On Christmas Eve Mela sees “her” shoes on Kasia’s feet and decides to get them back. The moment she puts them on, the magical light of the Moon falls upon her and the shoes start to dance. The Moon tells her that the shoes will be dancing until her father forgives her.
