A Basket Full of Wits [pl. Kobiałka z rozumem] …or a story showing that greed, dishonesty and subterfuge will sooner or later be punished and altruistic goodness rewarded… One greedy and evil Voivode and his sneaky servant Talon often make Jaś work hard for them. They send him to the village to bring strawberries, bread and butter, and sometimes to collect taxes. The local peasants are already very poor because the Voivode has taken almost everything, from them so when Jaś knocks again at the doors of peasants’ cottages, he leaves with nothing. Once on the way back, he meets a Beautiful Lady. In return for helping to mend a broken carriage he is given a tablecloth and a spell that brings various dishes to the table. Despite the protests of Goose, Jaś shows the gift to the Voivode and Talon. Of course, at night Talon steals the magic tablecloth, and in the morning he sends the boy to the countryside to collect the outstanding taxes. This time Jaś gets a lamb from the Beautiful Lady. It is a magic lamb with the fleece that produces golden thalers. Though Jaś tries to hide it, Talon steals his magic gift and sends him into the world to find the world’s greatest mind, in order to become a Voivode. This time Jaś gets a basket full of wits from Beautiful Lady…
